Is it Ever Too Late to Start Yoga?

by Arundhati Baitmangalkar

We got such great questions during our Ask Me Anything yoga challenge this November. We had a lot of questions about safe yoga practice, injuries, lifestyle and the practice of yoga. One of my favorite questions was asked by Kathy. She asked, “is it ever too late to start yoga?”

The answer to this is simple. It is never too late to start yoga. As long as you are breathing, you can practice yoga. Lack of flexibility, strength, time, etc. are all just excuses. Everyone can and must do yoga so they can realize their full potential, and additionally benefit from good physical and mental health. Freedom in the body leads to freedom in the mind.

The one thing to be aware of is that yoga practice evolves as we age. The practice that a young person has will be different from that of an older person. A younger person can maintain a more dynamic, rigorous and active practice, whereas an older person can still maintain a strong yoga practice, but needs to cater to the changing needs of the muscles and joints. Children practice altogether differently, with lots of movement and energy. The important thing is to honor your own body, wherever it is right now.

Women, when pregnant or menstruating, do a modified practice if you find a yoga teacher who is skilled enough to help you understand how to use yoga poses to your benefit. It is never too late to start a yoga practice. Watch below to learn more.
